Die Arbeit erforscht nutzerbasierte Praktiken und den Gebrauch von Stadtraum im Kontext alltäglicher Wohngebiete in Wien. Mittels des Transfers künstlerischer Techniken und interaktiver Medien in die Erforschung des Stadtraums werden vorgefundene Spuren von Gebrauch und Aneignung dokumentiert.
In der aktuellen Produktion von Stadt wird die Entwicklung und Repräsentation von urbanen Räumen getrennt: Pläne, Zeichnungen und Animationen inszenieren die Stadt als mögliche Darstellung der jeweiligen BetrachterInnen und dienen der Projektion von Vorstellungen. In diesen Planungsprozessen bleiben oft die Interessen der BewohnerInnen auf der Strecke, die eine vielfältigere Realität von Stadt leben – eine Komplexität und ständige Weiterentwicklung, die Urbanität tatsächlich ausmachen.
Die Forschungsarbeit fokussiert den Gebrauch der Stadt, betrachtet die Rolle unterschiedlicher AkteurInnen in der Entwicklung urbaner Räume und untersucht relationale Räume, die durch alltägliche Praktiken von NutzerInnen in den Stadtraum eingeschrieben werden. Ziel ist es Gebrauch und Praktiken darzustellen, die in aktuellen Stadtentwicklungsprozessen vernachlässigt werden. Die Arbeit dokumentiert den Gebrauch urbaner Räume um zu zeigen, dass alltägliche Praktiken quantifizierbar sind. Erkenntnisse und Rückschlüsse auf den Gebrauch urbaner Räume und die Rolle der NutzerInnen in der Stadtentwicklung sollen so gewonnen werden.
Die Methodik der Forschung umfasst Feldstudien und Experimente. Anhand dreier exemplarischer Case Studies am Nordrand von Wien dokumentiert die Studie Praktiken und Gebrauch im Stadtraum. Basierend auf einem Analyseraster werden urbane Daten gesammelt, die im Zusammenhang mit der Produktion und Repräsentation von NutzerInnen im Stadtraum stehen. Angewendete Techniken umfassen Mappings quantifizierbarer Gebrauchsspuren, Videoüberwachung und Tracken von Spuren.
The research explores user-based practices and use of urban space in the context of everyday residential areas in Vienna, found traces of use and appropriation are documented by the transfer of artistic techniques and interactive media in the exploration of urban spaces. In the current planning of cities drawings, animations and photographs stage the city as representation for the respective observer and serve as projection. These processes often exclude inhabitants that live a diverse reality of urban life - a complexity and constant change that constitutes urbanity.
The research focuses on the use of the city, considers the role of various actors in the development of urban areas and examines relational spaces that are inscribed into the urban space by everyday practices of users. The aim is to document the use of public space. The target is to present urban data linked to inhabitants and their everyday life and to present them in quantities to engage debate and form part of the actual discourse on participation in urban planning. The project focuses on actors and practices of urban space in a specific location to demonstrate that usage of urban space is quantifiable. The project collects experimental urban data related to the production and representation of urban spaces. It seeks to reveal actors and practices neglected in urban planning.
The research methodology includes field studies and experiments. In three exemplary Case Studies on the northern edge of the city of Vienna (Austria) the project documents practices and usage of urban space and demonstrates different actors involved, using artistic techniques and locative media devices. The applied techniques range from mapping quantifiable traces of usage, video observations and tracking evidences. Findings and conclusions on the use of urban space and the role of users in the urban development should be developed.
