The Interface Cultures Student Noor Stenfert Kroese wins the You Fab Global Creative Awards in the Student Price category for her work Rhiza, created in 2021.
The YouFab Awards is celebrating its 10th year as an annual global award that recognizes excellence in creative and digitally fabricated works of the new millennium. The YouFab Awards recognize and celebrate creative works and inventions that stem from a powerful collaboration between digital and physical fabrication, based on the concept that “Fab = creativity that combines and transcends the digital and physical realms”. The theme of the YouFab Awards 2021 Democratic Experiments. Which the jury describes as How can we think about the problems of the "inside" of human society together with the "outside"? In order to do this, we need to be aware of what our convenient lives have depended on, and listen to the voices of those we have excluded from our lives.

Rhiza is an interspecies connector that invites you to become part of the communication between her mycelium and oyster mushrooms. The oyster mushrooms and the mycelium in the tower continuously exchange biodata through electrical signals. These electrical signals are picked up by the biosensors and translated into vibrations that you can feel by standing with your bare feet on the mycelium floor-pads. Rhiza emerged as an aspiration to enable human beings to transgress their own species and connect with otherness in multiple ways. This complex network with its subtle blend of cooperation and conflict can be seen as an example of how we relate with each other, and our environmental systems. Just like human society, this growing inter-species society is characterized by variety, with its capacity to help and to hinder, to cooperate and to exploit. Nature is built on connections, and so are we.

Studentin von Interface Cultures gewinnt den YouFab 2021 Official Student Prize. Noor Stenfert Kroese wurde mit ihrer Arbeit RHIZA für den YouFab Global Creative Award 2021 ausgewählt. Als jährlich vergebener Preis, welcher herausragende kreative und digital entwickelte Arbeiten auszeichnet, können die YouFab Awards in Japan bereits auf ihr mittlerweile 10-jähriges Bestehen zurückblicken. Mit den YouFab Awards werden kreative und künstlerische Arbeiten und Erfindungen gewürdigt und gefeiert, die aus einem leistungsstarken Zusammenspiel zwischen digitaler und physischer Fertigung hervorgegangen sind und auf dem Konzept "Fab = Kreativität, die den digitalen und physischen Bereich kombiniert und diesen übersteigt" basieren. Noor Stenfert Koese konnte die Jury mit ihrer Arbeit RHIZA, ein hybrides Interface als Verbindung zwischen Mensch und Pilz, überzeugen. In dieser wunderschönen und ständig wachsenden Skulptur aus Pilzen sendet das normalerweise unterirdische Fadengeflecht eines Pilzes, genannt Mycel, ein Bio-Feedback über die am Boden liegenden Sensorplatten aus getrockneten Mycelstrukturen an den menschlichen Körper retour und ermöglicht so eine Form der Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Pilz.
