Arriving, getting caught, fading, views

The installation takes nearly the whole fore place in front of the train station Santa Lucia. Usually, when arriving in Venice you can appreciate the astonishing view over the city, which is built in the water. When leaving the train station an unexpected appearance surprises you. Something big covering the other side of the place.
The bent area blocks the usual view, leaving only the surroundings and the top of the church when looking straight out. In order to enjoy the nice view from another angle, one has to climb the ramp to reach the platform at the top. Glass guardrails to prevent people from falling of the ramp protect all sides of the ramp. On the way up only the dome of the church is visible in the middle. After reaching the viewpoint a perfect view over Venice can be admired.
You can also choose to walk to the other side via a gap in the ramp. The pillars under the construction create a forest-like feeling. As a construction base for the ramp steel-pillars and bearers are used. Single pillars are leaning in different angles to create interesting spaces underneath the main ramp. The whole walk able area consists of open mesh flooring with a profile to make them better to walk on. This mesh is mounted on the main and side beams and is also used for illuminating the construction during the night. Visitors are welcomed by a huge illuminated surface, which should make them feel welcome. The light is partly reflected by the mesh and therefore can be used to illuminate the lower area and the ramp itself at the same time.
To remind visitors on Venice at day, a light orange is used for the lamps mounted at the crossbeams. After walking to the top of the ramp the view is more appreciated than it would be if the view would “just be there“. This student work was designed during the semester programme project Venezia - Città Immaginarie.
