Arriving in Venice means to get caught in Venice‘s clutches. Once your in, you can‘t escape from the fast moving, vibrant town in which probably more tourists live than Italians do. Your way through Venice leads you from small alleys to cute campielli over thousands of bridges - little ones as well as big ones which bend a bow over the grande canal. No cars, almost no public green spaces, no huge places or centres. A town that is not comparable to others - an autistic spot in Italy that raises sympathy as well as a myth about the city in the water.
So far so good, but what about the inhabitants of Venice. In a survey a woman declared following wish: „more spaces to be advantagerous, especially for people who want to live, and not only visit, the city“.
Hence, Venice and its inhabitants plus its tourists long for some kind of standard urban spaces - to sit, to relax, to calm down and have a good time! So here we go: Venice Step-By-Step!
„Step-by-Step“ is an urban installation made out of beer crates and plywood. Through putting these elements together a varied landscape out of different levels, sizes arises which offers three different surfaces and therewith 3 possible ways to use this installation.

The Meadows
The plywood is covered with a shift of artificial lawn which is delivered in roles. So the assemblage can be done very easily, quickly and cost-efficently.

The Benches
For the benches the plywood keeps the way it is mounted. In these areas there is most of the time a greater hight to the next step so that you can sit conveniently on it.

The Ways
As for the ways tartan roles will be used. It‘s easy in montaging and also good for walking. A kind side effect is the slip resistance of the material.

The Construction
The temporary construction is solely built from beverage crates, plywoods, cable fixers, screws and of course some handcraft! All in all, „Step-By-Step“ has a maximum height of 1.65 meters. One unit is at least 15 centimetre high as it‘s adjusted to the stairs from the trainstation. The beverage crates have a height from 30 centimetre so for units with 0.15, 0.45, 0.75, 1.05, 1.35 or 1.65 metres a construction out of plywoods is required.

The Light Concept
The light leads the users safe and careful the „escape route“ down to the place of Santa Lucia - but only if they want to. But „Step-By-Step“ also offers the opportunity to get off-track, take a break. Sit down, lie in the grass, have a gossip with friends or just enjoy the last few minutes of a day and rethink things.
So I put LED lamps under the stairs. Therefor the lights lead the fastest way via the landscape to the trainstation. On the other side, the LED lamps also indirectly light the benches and the meadows. This student work was designed during the semester programme project Venezia - Città Immaginarie.
